EB paves the way for future automotive electronics trends with an operating system supporting multicore ECUs at the highest Automotive Safety Level ASIL D.

Erlangen, Germany, October 14, 2014 – Elektrobit (EB) presents its new operating system EB tresos Safety OS Multi-Core for automotive ECUs (electronic control units). It is the first safety operating system in the automotive industry that enables carmakers and suppliers to create AUTOSAR-based multi-core control units that conform to the highest Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL D) according to ISO 26262.

The in-car infrastructure is moving towards fewer, more powerful ECUs, with more functions running on one ECU. More and more software has to be integrated in the car, but the amount of ECUs is limited by growing network complexity and constraints of weight and space. In addition, safety relevant systems have an increasing performance need. Therefore, single-core solutions are reaching their limits and car makers need multi-core architectures for safety functions to create state-of-the-art automotive systems that satisfy their customers’ needs.

EB’s new operating system now enables to integrate safety relevant applications in a high-performance AUTOSAR multi-core environment up to the highest safety level ASIL D. Carmakers and suppliers can integrate multiple software functions from different vendors without interfering with each other on one ECU. This cutting-edge technology combines the flexibility of AUTOSAR multi-core software architectures with needs of safety projects. Now it is possible to distribute software components to different cores without affecting the availability of the individual CPU cores.

This paves the way for complex ECUs like Advanced Driver Assistant Systems (ADAS) or EPS (electric power steering) functions. EB tresos Safety OS Multi-Core is available for automotive safety microcontrollers like Infineon AURIXTM and Freescale Qorivva. The technology is based on EB’s certified single-core Safety OS that is already used in multiple series production vehicles.

“EB tresos Safety OS Multi-Core enables our customers to manage the challenges of complex, high-capacity safety related ECUs. This state-of-the-art Safety Operating Systems provides a stable base for new concepts like domain controller based software architectures for each car domain”, explains Stefan Duda, Head of Car Infrastructure at EB.

“With its high real-time performance, embedded safety and security features the AURIXTM microcontroller family is designed to meet the highest safety standards while increasing performance at the same time”, explains Thomas Boehm, Director, Microcontroller Chassis & Safety Application Line at Infineon Technologies. “Together, EB tresos Safety OS Multi-Core and Infineon AURIXTM are a powerful team that enables the integration of state-of-the-art software solutions into the next generation of cars.”

Elektrobit introduces EB tresos Safety OS Multi-Core at this year’s International Suppliers Fair (IZB), October 14 – 16 in Wolfsburg, at booth # 4426 in hall 4.
